UPR-RP serves more than 18,000 students, 20% graduate, and grants an average of over 3,000 degrees a year. It is recognized by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a research university "high research activity" (RU/H). As a public comprehensive doctoral institution, its academic offerings range from the baccalaureate to the doctoral degree, through 70 undergraduate programs and 19 graduate degrees with 71 specializations in the basic disciplines and professional fields. UPR‐RP has consistently granted the largest number of doctorate degrees to Hispanics in the US.
UPR-RP is the largest campus in terms of student population of the University of Puerto Rico System, and Puerto Rico's first public university.

UPRM has been accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) since 1946. Also, the engineering undergraduate program is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), the nursing undergraduate program is accredited by the National League for Nursing (NLN) and the Chemistry Department is recognized by the American Chemical Society (ACS). The College of Business Administration is going through the process of the AACSB accreditation. The Mayagüez campus of the University of Puerto Rico has been a member of Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) since 1966.
UPRM continues its development in the best tradition of a land-grant institution. It is a co-educational, bilingual, and non-sectarian school comprising the Colleges of Agricultural Sciences, Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Engineering and the Division of Continuing Education and Professional Studies. The College of Agricultural Sciences includes the Agricultural Experiment Station and the Agricultural Extension Service. In 2009, the campus population was composed of 12,108 students, 1,924 regular staff members and 1,037 members of the education staff.

The university became autonomous on September 1, 1970, and is currently accredited by the Council of Higher Education of Puerto Rico, the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and by the Congregation for Catholic Education.
On October 1982 a Multi-use Sports Complex inaugurated and was dedicated in honor of Rafael Pont Flores and it bears his name.

The university began as an extension of the Catholic University of Puerto Rico in the early 1960s. In 1982 it was awarded the official title of "Center", and later it became the Mayagüez Campus of the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez in 1996. During the 1989-1990 academic year the facilities in the Calle Ramón Emeterio Betances were inaugurated.
The campus includes two buildings. The enrollment is above two thousand students and the faculty part-time and full-time is composed of about one hundred professors.
It offers associates and bachelor's degrees. It also offers master's degrees in three areas: Business administration (4 concentrations), education (3 concentrations) and social sciences.

A professionally oriented institution, Universidad del Este offers occupational, liberal arts, education, health, science and business programs leading to certificates, associate, bachelor, and master's degree programs in different disciplines.

As an autonomous school it was created by an amendment of legislation by the Legislative Assembly of Puerto Rico in 1971, and achieved its definitive form and autonomy under Public Law 54 of August 22, 1990.
The school offers bachelor degrees in seven concentrations, Graphic Arts, Photography and Design (with specialties in Digital Graphic Design and Photography and Motion), Art Education, Sculpture, Painting, Industrial Design and Fashion Design. Today, the school is Puerto Rico's foremost institution of higher education in the visual arts. The Building was formerly the Insular Madhouse or Manicomio Insular.
In 1972 it gained autonomy under the name of Colegio Universitario del Turabo, and in 1982 it received authorization from the Council on Higher Education of Puerto Rico to be renamed as the Universidad del Turabo.

The university offers undergraduate programs. Offerings include bachelor degrees in: business administration (with minors in accounting, finance, management or marketing), biology (with minors in general biology or human focus), computer science, physical education (special physical education and elemental physical education), electronics (electronics engineering technology), materials science, pedagogy (Pre-school and Elementary School) and office systems. UPRB also offers Associate Degrees in: electronics (Electronics Technology and Instrumentation Technology), humanities (arts), Engineering (Civil Engineering: Surveying, Civil Engineering: Construction, Industrial Engineering Technology, Production Technology) and Office Systems. The university also has transfer programs to other campuses in various programs including: social sciences, humanities, engineering, pedagogy and chemistry. This campus is also well known for their business administration programs and computer science programs among others.
The extraordinary sporting achievements of the students and their UPRB extracurricular activities related to music and theater are widely acknowledged among the student population of the country. Also very popular is its Extended University program designed for students who for various reasons are unable to comply with a regular daytime schedule, as well as partnerships with businesses and industries in the area where students can do internships and practical programs before graduation. UPR-Bayamón excels in the Liga Atlética Interuniversitaria's (LAI) Women Basketball, with an historic 10 consecutive championships, and Cheerleading. Also, it holds first place 5 years in a row in the dance team's competition.
