With an objective to address water-related issues, the then Arba Minch Water Technology Institute (AWTI) was established in September 1979 EC (1986). Then, AWTI used to offer short and long-term trainings; conducting research and rendering consultancy services in water sector.
Until 1993, the institute was under Water Resource Commission and then it got transferred to the Ministry of Education. In the wake of nation’s development plan to produce qualified manpower, the aforesaid institute was scaled up to the level of university as Arba Minch University in 2004.
The then Commissioner of WRC, Mr Alem Alazar, articulated the initial purpose of the institute was to train a middle level professionals (diploma-level and BSc degree) to narrow the gap between the professional position and the low-level technicians. Arba Minch Water Technology Institute started its academic functioning in September 1986 by accepting 181 students in two degree, two advanced diploma and two diploma programs.
The main objective of the institute was to produce a skilled and qualified manpower, which is vital for effective utilization and exploitation of water resources of the country for various aspects of development.
Among the many specific objectives, the main objectives were to provide theoretical and practical education designed to produce manpower at various levels, to conduct both basic and applied research to ensure the effective utilization of water resources for the development of the country and to prepare, plan and conduct refresher courses in response to the specific training needs as per the demand by various organizations working in the field of water.

The college has been providing Level 3 certificate and Level 4 diploma, and degree programs. This year Technical and Vocational Educational Training TVET is changed to Level 2, Level 3 and Level 4. This system will grow up to Level 5 and Kunuz College has fulfilled the requirement and began to function currently.
In the last five years, Kunuz College has graduated nearly 1000 Students in, Accounting, Information Technology, Marketing, Law, and Office Systems Administration at regular and extension.
The ministry of education accredits the programs of the college. Admission of students is based on the criteria set by the Ministry of Education. The college presently has a student body of 800.

As of 2010, the university offers about 42 undergraduate and 17 postgraduate programs. but now the University offers 54 undergraduate and 64 postgraduate. These are organized under the College of Medicine and Health Sciences, College of Business and Economics, College of Natural and Computational Sciences, College of Social Sciences and Humanities, and Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Faculty of Agriculture, and three schools (School of Law, School of Technology and School of Education).

The college was established in 1972 as teacher training institute for teachers at the primary level. The capacity of the buildings was considered to be sufficient for about 500 trainees. At that time it was started with the aim of preparing teachers for elementary first cycle level in the in-service and pre-service program.

The Vision of the New Generation University College (NGUC) as a 'Center for Excellence' was born out of the dynamic ideas and the desire to assist the national and regional endeavors to provide an adequate number of total quality higher education institutions.
The university was founded with the help of Oklahoma State University (OSU), accepting its first students in 1954, and the new campus was opened in January 1958 by Emperor Haile Selassie. OSU's participation set a record for American technical assistance programs, with 60 professionals supporting this project at one time, but due to the lack of qualified educators this required a commitment to his endeavor from the University for several years; this degree of commitment was due to the personal support of the former OSU president, Henry G. Bennett.
Haramaya University was promoted from a college within Addis Ababa University on May 27, 1985 to an independent university. For many years the university had been limited to only an agricultural curriculum, but in 1996 the university was given permission to open other faculties and departments.

The college conducts teaching/learning processes in its own premises located in the Abima suburb of Debre Marqos. In 2010, the college plans to expand its programs in different fields at bachelor’s degree level paving its way to gain university standing. It also aims to offer distance education in various fields. For these expansion projects, Washera college has received an additional land from the municipality of Debre Markos.
