AUT was created in 1951. It was first called "High Institute of Agriculture" (Albanian: Instituti i Lartë Bujqësor). It received its current name in 1991.

At the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, EU holds the first place among universities in Albania.
The university identifies itself as secular; independent sources assert that it is part of the Gülen movement, which has been active in Albania since 1992 and owns/operates a number of schools (including Epoka) through the Turgut Özal Education Company.
At the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, Beder University is ranked as the fifth university in Albania.
BU is a coed institution. It offers Bachelor, Master of Science and Professional Master degrees in English and Albanian. Two bachelor programs are 100% English. On June 3 of 2013 Beder signed a Memorandum of Understanding with University of Tirana. They have started the construction of their modern campus in Sauk.
The name of Bedër University derives from Badr meaning "full moon" (بدر ) in Arabic. The Albanian name is Universiteti Hëna e Plotë.

The university was created in 2009 by decision No. 279 (dated 12-03-2009) of the Council of Ministers of Albania and acts according to the law No 9741 (date 21-5-2007 – and its later changes) given by the Ministry of Education and Science.
UNYT offers locally Bachelor’s degrees conferred by the State University of New York's Empire State College and study programs through the SUNY Learning Network.
Most UNYT faculty members are foreign-educated Albanians. UNYT offers Bachelor, Master, and Doctoral degrees.
Since September 2004, UNYT, in collaboration with Institut Universitaire Kurt Bösch in Sion, Switzerland and the University of Sunderland, offers a Master of Business Administration program. As of June 2004, UNYT has become an associate partner of the Cambridge University International Examinations.
According to the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, UNYT is ranked as the seventh university in Albania.
The first rector was Prof. Dr. Gramoz Pashko (former Deputy Prime Minister and former Minister of Economy of the Republic of Albania), who died in a helicopter crash in July 2006.
There are 510 students enrolled in the academic programs.

University level courses in Gjirokastra had already started in 1968 when a branch of the business school of the University of Tirana had started to operate. One year later, in 1969 started the Agronomy School as a branch of the Agricultural University of Tirana, which lasted 10 years. Also, in 1969 started the Pedagogical Institute and the branch of the Academy of Physical and Sports Education Vojo Kushi which operated for 5 years.
On the basis of this experience in 1971 started its operations the Higher Pedagogical Institute. In 1980 the Biology-Chemistry School, branch of the University of Tirana was opened. In 1986 started to operate the Albanian Language School of Higher Pedagogy.

It opened first in 1859 in Shkoder, back then the center of Scutari Vilayet of Ottoman Empire. In 1870, the seminary brought to life its own printing press called "Press of the Immaculate Virgin" (Albanian: Shtypshkroja e Zojes s'Paperlyeme). The press printed in 1876 its own book, Christian Doctrine (Albanian: Dotrina e kerscten) of Engjell Radoja (1820-1880), which would be followed by many others.
With the rise of Communism in Albania, the Jesuits would be targets of persecution. The college's rector Father Daniel Dajani would be arrested together with Father Gjon Fausti (vice-provincial of the Jesuits) on December 31, 1945. They were executed on 4 March 1946. In April 1946, the authorities closed down all Jesuit institutions and the Jesuit Order was outlawed.
With the reestablishment of diplomatic relations between Albania and the Holy See in 1991, the college reopened in October of the same year.

Its campus is in Tirana National Park and has facilities such as a sports yard and cafeteria which provide for the student's social lives.
The university offers majors and minors in fields such as information technologies, business law, marketing, international business, international relations, management, public administration, English, and social psychology. It provides library and computing and networking resources, and major campus buildings are wired to the university network.
As part of the Dudaj Group, MBU offers students the opportunity to practice their knowledge through internships or summer jobs at business activities of the group. MBU provides financial aid schemes to admitted students which can be merit based scholarships, employment schemes and awards.
