In 1959, the Extension of University Education Act forced restricted registrations of black students for most of the apartheid era; despite this, several notable black leaders graduated from the university. It was desegregated once again prior to the abolition of apartheid in 1990. Several of apartheid's most provocative critics, of either European or African descent, were one-time students and graduates of the university.
The university has an enrolment of 30,833 students as of 2013, of which approximately 18 percent live on campus in the university's 22 residences. As of 2013, 67.14 percent of the university's total enrolment is for undergraduate study, with the remaining 30.86 percent being postgraduate.

Established in 1975 by the Act No. 9.753 which authorizes the State Executive Branch to create Ceará State Educational Foundation(FUNEDUCE), UECE is the largest state university of Ceará. It is involved in teaching, research and science outreach in many areas of knowledge. Its structure consists of a network of campuses that privileges the courses aimed at the training of teachers. The undergraduate programs in Business Administration, Accounting and Psychology are among the best in the country according to Students Performance National Exam (Enade).
It has ten campuses, two of them in Fortaleza (the main campus is called Campus do Itaperi). The other campuses are in the cities of Quixadá, Itapipoca, Crateús, Limoeiro do Norte, Iguatu, Tauá and Pacoti.

Since the Yeshiva focuses on semicha (ordination), all students have studied at other institutions for several years. After successfully completing the one-year programme, students receive semicha from both Rabbi Wineberg and Rabbi Yaacov Warhaftig of Machon Ariel in Jerusalem . To date 98 Rabbis have been ordained at the Yeshiva .
The Yeshiva is an important component of the Pretoria Jewish community - there is daily interaction between students and congregants, and one-on-one torah study with members of the community every evening.
