KazNU is the oldest classical university of the Republic established by the Decree of the Kazakh Regional Committee (KRC) office dated November 13, 1933. One year after Kazakhstan's 1990 declaration of independence, the name was changed to Al-Farabi Kazakh State University. In 2001, the government classified it as a "national" university. More than 20000 students, graduates and PhD students study at KazNU, and there are more than 2500 faculty members working at KazNU, including 400 doctors of science, professors and more than 800 candidates of science and associate professors. Like other universities founded under the Soviet system, it is highly centralized.
The university was created as a "mutual university" between Kazakhstan and Turkey, in an arrangement formalised in agreement between Nursultan Nazarbayev and Süleyman Demirel in 1993. Under the university's charter, the rector of the university is appointed by the Higher Educational Council of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and the first vice rector is appointed by the Higher Educational Council of the Republic of Turkey. Half of the Board of Trustees are appointed by each country, and Turkey appoints the Head of the Board.
The University is a member of the Caucasus University Association.

ALMA is one of the first business higher schools in Kazakhstan — the University was organized in 1988 as Alma-Ata School of Managers, in 1996 it became the International Academy of Business. In 2014 it adopted its current name.
Nazarbayev University is legally linked to both the Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools and the Nazarbayev Endowment Fund, all of which are dedicated to promoting educational reform in Kazakhstan.
On June 15, 2015 Kazakhstan President awarded diplomas to graduates of the first cohort of the Nazarbayev University. That day the first 446 students completed their bachelor's degree.

The Academy (Kazakh: Т. Қ. Жүргенов атындағы Қазақ ұлттық өнер академиясы) began as the theatrical faculty of the Kurmangazy Institute of Arts, today National Conservatory, in 1955. It was named after Temirbek Zhurgenov (1898-1939) in 1989.

The university was established in 2001 in Almaty. In 2006, the university was relocated to Astana to be a branch office of the Turar Ryskulov Kazakh Economic University in order to develop a new educational and cultural center in Astana. In 2007 after the changes in legislation regarding the educational sphere the branch office has seized the activity and was transformed into an independent higher educational institution – Kazakh University of Economics, Finance and International Trade.
The University was established in 1996, by the initiatives of the President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, and the former President of Turkey, Suleyman Demirel.
SDU has been utilizing its new “Smart Campus” since the academic year of 2011-2012. The campus was specially built with the capacity for accommodating more than 7000 students. There are 8 faculties at the university, of which courses are instructed in English and Kazakh languages. New campus offers an excellent learning environment with its 16 lecture theatres, 120 auditoriums, 3 research centers, 8 computer labs, 2 internet cafés, conference hall, stadium, gym, medical center, 2 halls of residence and 2 comprehensive libraries, which are based on electronic cataloging system and search engine. Additionally, the campus houses 3 canteens and coffee bars. At the moment, some parts of the campus are under construction.

AUPET is building a third educational case with a new modern athletic field. Undergraduate students can receive a second bachelor's degree in economics from the Moscow Power Engineering Institute simultaneously with studying at AUPET .
UCA was established to offer an internationally recognised standard of higher education in Central Asia and prepare graduates to contribute leadership, ideas and innovation to the economies and communities of the region. UCA’s mission is to foster the socio-economic development of Central Asia, particularly its mountain societies, while helping the peoples of the region preserve and draw upon their rich cultural heritages as assets for the future. The University is advancing construction of three campuses located in Khorog, Tajikistan; Naryn, Kyrgyz Republic; and Tekeli, Kazakhstan.
In the meantime, several UCA initiatives offer professional training and research opportunities and resources. These include: the School of Professional and Continuing Education, the Institute of Public Policy and Administration, the Mountain Societies Research Institute, the Cultural Heritage and Humanities Unit, the Central Asian Faculty Development Programme and the Aga Khan Humanities Project.
