The university was born following wide-ranging university reforms in Cameroon. UB, as it is fondly referred to, was conceived in the English-speaking tradition; the University of Buea seeks to foster the essence of that system, while situating itself within the larger bilingual and multicultural context of Cameroon.

The university offers Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral degree programs both on-campus and online to students in Cameroon, the United Kingdom, the United States, and over a dozen other countries. The university's motto is "Servire Sine Fine," the Latin for “Service Without Limit” , and the university's slogans include: “Transforming Lives, Transforming Society” and "Learn with Support, Graduate with Confidence."
The faculties and schools are spread across the dioceses of Bamenda Ecclesiastical Province, with the main campus located in Bamenda. While the main campus is being developed, the university is operating at the Saint Joseph’s Catholic Cathedral Primary School.
Professors and Lecturers at the University are recruited from sacred (i.e., theology, canon law, etc.) and secular disciplines (e.g., letters, philosophy, education, social sciences, economics). The majority of degrees and diplomas awarded by the Catholic University of Cameroon, Bamenda are state-authorized diplomas, as the university is certified to issue them by the Ministry of Higher Education. Theological degrees are awarded in the name of the Holy See and are the result of a prescribed course of study in the ecclesiastical faculty of theology.

Former subsidiary of Sabena Flight Academy, the school trains airline pilots, flight attendants (preparation of the Certificat de formation à la sécurité) and flight dispatchers.

The IRIC serves African and world diplomacy and advocates excellence, a philosophy otherwise underpinning its own overall performances. The IRIC takes pride on its status as the oldest school of diplomacy south of Sahara, and brings the perceptions and the experiences of countries of the southern hemisphere to the world community.
The IRIC has Observer Status at all assemblies and summits of the African Union. Observer Status means that the IRIC has full diplomatic and delegate rights accorded to a member state of the African Union, with the exception that it may not cast votes
