Professor Vladimir Vladimirovich Apanasovich, PhD, has headed the school since the beginning. Over 3500 people have graduated from SBMT BSU, with more than 700 acquiring their Master's degree or Specialist's Degrees, over 1200 completing Advanced Training courses, and 1500 having improved their professional skills. Currently, over 2800 students are enrolled in various SBMT BSU programs.

It was established in 1945 as the Belarus Theatrical institute. Art faculty was established in 1953, and renamed into the "Belarusian State Academy of Arts" in 2001. With an enrolment of over 1,300 students, the academy is largest art and design institution in the Republic of Belarus.

Minsk had earlier had a conservatory, Minsk Conservatory. It was founded in 1932 and up to 1992 was known as the Belarusian State Conservatory. In 2000 the Belarusian Academy of Music was granted status as the leading institution of the national system of education in the field of musical art, alongside the Belarusian State Academy of Arts.

In 1968, technical faculty was formed at Gomselmash agricultural machinery plant. In 1973 it became Gomel branch of Belarusian State Polytechnical Institute. In 1981 this branch became an independent institute and in 1998 the institute was reformed into technical university.
