The university was established on August 29, 1997. The university currently offers instruction leading to a master's degree in the following eight fields of study: business administration, industrial engineering and systems management, computer and information science, political science, public health, law, comparative legal studies, and teaching English as a foreign language. Since 2013 university started providing undergraduate education in the following fields: computational sciences, business, English and communication By offering these programs in English, AUA strives to become accessible to qualified individuals from other countries in the region.
Qualified students may complete an interdisciplinary Certificate in Environmental Conservation and Research. In preparation for the academic program, AUA offers its students instruction in the English language and in computer applications.

Originally, the Faculty of Pedagogy in Goris was founded in 1967 as part of the Armenian State Pedagogical University.
in 2006, by the decision of the Government of Armenia, the Goris State University was formed based on the branches of the National Polytechnic University of Armenia and the Armenian State Pedagogical University.

The ATC is established as a Department within the Armenian State Agrarian University and offers Bachelor and Master's degree programs in Agribusiness and Marketing. The curriculum is western-structured, based on the undergraduate and graduate (MAB) degree curriculum of Texas A&M University. Courses are taught in English by American and Armenian instructors mainly with graduate degrees from the U.S. universities.
Classrooms, the videoconferencing room, and the high-tech computer lab are furnished with modern equipment and technology, which gives the students a complete working environment for both classroom and independent study.

Originally, the Faculty of Pedagogy in Vanadzor was founded on 9 July 1969 as part of the Armenian State Pedagogical University. In 1982, the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of the Yerevan State University-Vanadzor branch was opened.
On 30 April 2014, by the decision of the Government of Armenia, the educational institutions of Vanadzor were restructured to form The Vanadzor State University.
The current rector of the university is Dr. professor Gurgen Khachatryan.
